Having been diagnosed with genital psoriasis three years ago, I know that there is nothing that can be considered good about it. However, there is good news regarding this skin condition and that is the fact that it is one of the most treatable forms of psoriasis there is. Effective treatments are more universal, meaning if something works for one person, there is a good chance it will work for another. This is not the case with most forms of the skin disease.
Inverse psoriasis can also affect the genital areas and both forms of the disease have the same effects on the same parts. In both men and women, it can affect the following areas: the upper thighs, the creases between the thighs and the groin, the anus and skin surrounding it, the crease of the buttocks, and the region just above the genitals where pubic hair grows.
In women, psoriasis of the vulva can occur and can be very uncomfortable. If this occurs to you, do not scratch the infected area because the scratching can very easily cause infection. Scratching the skin can also cause a thickening of the skin which can cause even more itching and discomfort. Generally, only the outer skin of the vaginal is affected and rarely is the urethra affected.
In men, the glans and the shaft can be affected by genital psoriasis and the appearance of the infection can be scaly, or can be smooth and shiny. Often, the infected areas are very uncomfortable. Both circumcised an uncircumcised men can be affected.
Genital psoriasis patients are usually very happy with the speed and effectiveness of treatment. There are three basic types. First, a topical treatment is generally recommended because it is very effective, inexpensive, and not time consuming. If the patient does not respond to a topical treatment, they are moved on to ultraviolet light treatment. In severe cases, these two types of treatment can be combined. If neither is effective, systemic medications are prescribed. This is not common because most patients show tremendous improvement from the less evasive techniques.
